The Council of Judges of Ukraine (COJ) is a panel that arranges for and controls the enforcement of decisions adopted by the Congress of Judges of Ukraine and decides on convening of the Congress of Judges in between the congresses of judges. The COJ’s main objective is to ensure judicial independence. Pursuant to this objective, the COJ, in particular, develops and organizes the implementation of initiatives targeted atstrengthening the independence of courts and judges, as well as improving the organizational support of the courts activities, considers the issues of legal and social protection of judges, and also providesrecommendations on optimizing the courts activitiesto state authorities and local governments. The USAID New Justice Program facilitates activities for the COJ representatives aimed at thedevelopment, discussion and implementation of legislative and regulatory changes to strengthen judicial independence and self-governance, including the introduction of high ethical judicial activity standards and standards for conflict of interest resolution within the justice sector, judicial disciplinary liability, etc.
